Down in Pine Ridge, Squire Skimp had hoped Abner would invest his payout from selling the Jot ‘Em Down Store into silver mine stock, but Abner has suddenly disappeared following his abduction. Today, Lum is at home practicing his singing when a ringing telephone mercifully interrupts him. It’s Lizabeth, anxiously calling to ask if there is any word on Abner’s whereabouts.
Dick Huddleston arrives and takes over the phone call, suspecting that Abner is either with Squire or that Squire knows exactly where he is. When they check on Squire, they find the Jot ‘Em Down Store locked up tight with nobody around. Lum and Dick recap the recent drama, including Abner’s stubborn refusal to buy into silver mine shares. While Lum defends the mine—having invested heavily in it himself—Dick makes it clear he has no trust in Squire or his business schemes.
As the two friends debate the store sale, concern grows that something terrible may have happened to Abner. Just as they begin jumping to conclusions, Squire nonchalantly walks in. Lum and Dick immediately confront him, but Squire remains suspiciously confident. However, when Dick steps up to the telephone to call the sheriff, Squire’s cool exterior quickly begins to crumble.
