Shirley is much the typical teen, even by some of today's standards, sneaking out of the house, demanding privacy, sassing those in authority positions, testing the limits of her liberties, and desiring to push those limits farther. Her undercover work means she can't even let her cop boyfriend know what she'll be up to.

Dan Emmet is a local crooner, and town fire marshal. He loses his job when his girlfriend's house burns down, and it's his fault. He sets out to make it big, and return with enough cash to convince his future father in law to let him marry his daughter. On the riverboat, he falls in with a con man who takes him for all the money he had to his name. The two pair up to entertain in blackface in a theater. They become a big enough hit to play for a run, but is there a new girl in Dan's future?

A story set at the out set of World War 2 as Britain is being drawn into the war. Greer Garson is Mrs Miniver, wife of an architect, and firmly placed in high society. Her lifestyle of her kids, shopping, matters at church, and tending to the gardening is about to be disrupted. The social events, and extravagances of high society are about to meet the demands of wartime blackouts and rationing.
