Spike Jones (Spotlight Review) Jan August. 480326

Spike salutes the coming of Spring as he opens with “Ain’t She Sweet.” His intro is quickly interrupted by a knock at the door from a man looking for a job. Spike then introduces Dorothy Shea and presents her with a special corsage in honor of the season, taking a moment to reminisce about a former love interest. Dorothy sings her latest Columbia recording, “The Sample Song.”

Next, Spike and the City Slickers gear up for a musical drama—a melodramatic rap prelude to “Slap Her Down Again, Pa.” Jan August joins Dorothy in congratulating Spike on the Western melodrama, but they are interrupted by a pair of alleged songwriters demonstrating their questionable talents. Jan then takes the stage to perform his big hit, “Ay Ay Ay” (or “Misirlou” / “Avoya Negra”).

Announcer Joe King steps in with a message from the sponsor before Spike is interrupted once more by the fast-talking Georgie Rock, who shares another flowery, patriotic, and overly flattering poem. Dorothy returns to sing “Hooray For Love,” followed by Doodles Weaver as Professor Feetlebaum, delivering “Springtime in the Rockies” in his signature style—complete with goofy jokes and his iconic horse race routine.

The show wraps up with a Spring medley tribute featuring Jan August playing “Love Is Your Magic Spell,” Dorothy singing “Blue Skies,” and Spike closing out with “April Showers.”
(P.S. Is it just me, or did anyone else notice the irony of having “August” in Spring?)
