Before the story begins, the Sons of the Pioneers set the mood with a performance of “Red River Valley”.

While attending a local rodeo, a cowboy suddenly dies of an apparent heart attack. The doctor finds no immediate signs of foul play, leading most people to dismiss it as an unusual but natural death. Everyone except Roy Rogers, that is—who knows about the cowboy’s young family and his day job as a bank teller.

When news arrives that the bank has just been robbed, Roy suspects a connection. Did the death at the arena tie into the robbery, or was it connected to the rival cowboy who took first prize after the favorite died? A cryptic clue left on a piece of paper sends Roy on the trail to investigate.

Though the police begin to suspect murder, they need to locate the winning cowboy for questioning. Did he kill his rival just to claim the prize money, or is he involved in the bank heist? Roy rides in to solve the case, bring the culprits to justice, and decipher the coded message on the paper.
