Down in Pine Ridge, Lum has been hired on at the Jot ‘Em Down Store, working as a clerk for Abner. After a week of constant bossing and abuse, Lum has had enough and decides to team up with their longstanding rival, Squire Skimp.
Today, Dick Huddleston stops by Lum’s house to try to talk some sense into him, explaining that Abner was only being harsh to teach him a lesson. Lum finds that hard to believe, and when Abner attempts to come inside and apologize, Lum sics his dog on him. Dick asks what kind of job Squire has in mind, but Lum doesn’t know—he just sees it as a way to get out from under Abner’s thumb.
Squire is scheduled to return later with all the details, though Dick remains deeply skeptical of his motives. When Squire finally appears, Dick takes off. Squire lays out the details of the new business venture, and as soon as Lum hears that he will be named president, he is completely sold. Whatever happened to looking before you leap? Trouble is almost certainly ahead for Lum.
