Don Wilson rolls the clock back to the previous day, joining Rochester and Jack at the breakfast table for National “Save a Wife” Week—though what that has to do with Jack and Rochester is anyone’s guess! Soon, the rest of the gang arrives at the Benny house to gather around the television for the World Series. Mary Livingstone drops by with gossip about a secret whispering party thrown by the Colemans, leaving Jack to wonder why he was left off the guest list. Dennis Day wanders in looking to lay down a bet on the game, urging Jack to “put up or shut up” before delivering a musical performance of “A Lot of Love Have I.”
Bob Crosby can’t make it to the house, but he phones in with jokes about the band and his brother Bing staying at his place. Then, New York Giants manager Leo Durocher pops in to catch the game with his pal Jack. The Sportsmen Quartet—disguised as the four umpires—sing their sponsored message to the tune of “Nobody Loves an Umpire.”
When the television goes on the fritz, Jack scrambles to find the game broadcast on the radio. After wading through bizarre commercial interruptions and questionable singing acts, he finally tunes into the play-by-play featuring announcer Frank Nelson. When the TV set suddenly kicks back on, Frank Nelson turns out to be the commentator on screen as well! The chaos reaches its peak when a controversial call leads Leo Durocher into a heated argument with the television screen—resulting in Leo getting thrown out of the game right from Jack’s living room!
