In an upscale suburb, a woman shatters the quiet by shouting that she hates the lady inside before gunning her down. The shooter, Mrs. Taylor, turns herself in to Mr. Keen, though she can shockingly offer no explanation for her actions. Bizarrely, she claims she had never even seen the victim, Mrs. Ellis, prior to that fateful day.
Mr. Keen alerts Mr. Taylor with scant details, asking him to meet at the crime scene, where local police are already suspicious of the self-confessed shooter. Meanwhile, a distraught Betty Hooper, the victim’s niece, grieves the loss. Can Mr. Keen prove the woman with the smoking gun is actually innocent, especially when a strong motive points straight to the niece?
The mystery deepens when a shadowy face in the window is identified as Vern Philips—a man carrying a gun missing two bullets, matching the murder weapon. Soon, Mr. Taylor arrives, complicating the narrative further by claiming he overheard Philips arguing with the dead woman, while Betty insists her aunt lived in fear of Philips. Mr. Keen has Philips handed over to the police, but circumstantial evidence and suppositions alone won’t close the case.
Back at the jail, Mrs. Taylor maintains a deadpan routine of memory lapses, insisting she killed out of jealousy. Is her confession just an elaborate shield to protect someone else? Looking past the smoke and mirrors, Mr. Keen prepares to confront the true mastermind. When Mr. Taylor attempts mind control on the investigator, it seems the mighty detective might be falling into a trap. Listen in to find out how Mr. Keen breaks free and delivers the undeniable proof straight to the police!
