Pine Ridge is abuzz as one high-class social party follows another. Today, Grandpap and Cedric talk with Abner about how swell Lum looked at the latest gathering—leaving Abner as the only one in town not buying into the late-night high-society craze.
When Lum stops in at the Jot ‘Em Down Store, the conversation turns to taking singing lessons. Lum and Abner break out into the classic tune “They Cut Down the Old Pine Tree,” joined by Grandpap and Cedric for a few rounds of four-part harmony. It’s quite an impressive radio trick, considering all four distinct character voices are performed by the show’s two stars, Chester Lauck and Norris Goff.
Afterward, Abner gets confused over what a “coming-out party” actually means. Squire Skimp also drops by to discuss his mining stock and plans for an exclusive Pine Ridge country club, complete with a golf course, open only to residents who own enough silver mine shares.
Horlick’sDrama: In a local drugstore, a pharmacist tries to push an imitation malted milk product on a customer, but the buyer refuses—only the genuine Horlicks brand will do!
Did You Know?
Lum and Abner was an American radio and television comedy that aired as a network program from 1931 to 1954. Created by Chester Lauck and Norris Goff, the show was modeled after life in the small town of Waters, Arkansas, near where they grew up. The series grew so popular that Waters officially changed its name to Pine Ridge in 1936 in honor of the show’s fictional town. (Excerpted from Wikipedia)
