On his way home, Gildersleeve stops by to visit Peavy at the drugstore. While Peavy suggests running a newspaper advertisement, Gildy isn’t keen on the idea of becoming a Fuller Brush salesman. As he picks up magazines to keep Marjorie company during her babysitting assignment, her boyfriend, Ben, arrives. Last-minute changes to the evening’s plans are made as Ben is sent along with Marjorie—though the question remains: who was actually supposed to be babysitting?
As a surprise, Gildersleeve brings Ben home for supper, but Marjorie seems less than surprised. Does Ben realize he is being roped into helping with the babysitting job? After dinner, Gildersleeve takes the kids to their destination, but decides to clear the matter directly with the parents. The job was supposed to be for Marjorie alone, not a couple. The homeowner assumes a student is supposed to handle the assignment and mistakes Gildersleeve for that student—asking if he is a veteran!
In clearing the air, Gildersleeve learns that Mrs. Dalrymple is a widow and decides to handle the job himself. We learn a little about her past and how she met her now-deceased husband. As she leaves for her date, Gildersleeve prepares for an evening alone with the baby and a watchful guard dog, capping off the night with a surprising realization about Mrs. Dalrymple’s deep waters.
