The high-society craze continues to sweep through Pine Ridge, but Abner isn’t enjoying it and struggles to fit in. Down at the Jot ‘Em Down Store, he complains to Dick Huddleston about missing dinner because Lizabeth is too focused on high society to take care of the home—so much so that she wants to hire a helper. Should Abner put his foot down and make demands, or cave in and close the store to join the high life? Lum, on the other hand, is diving headfirst into society and planning his own coming-out party.
After Dick leaves, Squire Skimp arrives alongside Snake Hogan, who makes a pitch to buy the Jot ‘Em Down Store. When a phone call for a grocery order calls Abner away, Snake and Squire discuss their real scheme: buy the store from Abner for cash, then trick him into investing that money right back into Squire’s silver mine stock. Squire even plans to have a friend pose as a big-time buyer to convince the locals that the stock is booming.
When Abner returns, he proves to be a tough sell. Snake offers $1,500 cash on the spot, but Abner holds out until Snake raises the offer to $2,000. Now it’s up to Squire to swindle that cash out of Abner’s hands and into silver mine stock. Will their scheme succeed?
