Working the auto theft detail, Officer Joe Friday discusses his recent weekend plans and sunburn with Frank Smith. Soon, the detectives respond to a call involving an overdue rental truck reported as stolen. Following a quick paper trail, they bring in their suspect: Summers, a known drug user with plenty of holes in his story. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough hard evidence to hold him, and he is let go.
Over the next few weeks, voiceover narration reveals that similar robberies continue to plague the city. The case breaks open when the missing rental truck that started it all turns up abandoned in Mexico, loaded down with narcotics and thoroughly processed by law enforcement. Armed with a massive tip from an informant, Friday learns that a smuggling ring is utilizing the stolen trucks to traffic narcotics across the border.
Summers is picked up once again, but he’s merely a small-time cog in a much larger criminal machine. Will he flip and help law enforcement take down the kingpins? Tune in to the conclusion next week to find out!
