Jubilee (AFRS) Andy Kirk AHO, Bob Crosby. ep68 440228

The SI image shows a vintage radio broadcast studio. In the foreground, a man in a suit speaks animatedly into a large, old-fashioned microphone. He is seated at a desk with various radio equipment, including a coil of wire and headphones. Behind a glass window in the background, a band with several musicians plays instruments like trumpet and drums, with a conductor leading them. Two signs on the wall read "Jubilee" and "AFRS," indicating the show's name and the American Forces Radio Service. The lighting is warm and nostalgic.

With a flood of jive talk, host Ernie Whitman kicks off the show with plenty of swing and style. Andy Kirk and his orchestra get the room moving with “New Orleans Jump,” followed by Ernie chatting with Andy about bobby socks and reading a letter from an eager listener. June Richmond steps up to deliver a soulful rendition of “Basin Street Blues,” before Ernie introduces a talented quartet of service members who lay down a jazzy, mellow version of “Blue Skies.” Andy Kirk returns as his vocalists sing “Little Joe from Chicago.”

Later in the show, Bob Crosby drops by—sans his band, the Bobcats—to chat with Ernie about nicknames, brother Bing Crosby, horses, and some of the typical troubles he has with his band members. Bob treats the audience to vocal performances of “A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening” and “San Fernando Valley.” To close out the musical sets, Andy Kirk dedicates his final number, “Flying Home,” to a few soldiers who sent in mailbag requests. Ernie and Andy share some warm parting words for the troops to wrap up another unforgettable broadcast.
