Ed plans to meet his buddy Charlie for an early morning weekend fishing trip. However, a mix-up in communication and bad timing put Ed in the wrong place at the wrong time. Overly eager police officers mistake him for a burglar who has been terrorizing the neighborhood.
Determined not to let their suspect slip away, the officers deny Ed his basic constitutional rights. Held without formal charges, Ed is denied a phone call to an attorney, subjected to relentless interrogation, placed alone in a lineup, and subjected to an unlawful search of his house without a warrant. Furthermore, the lead officer flatly refuses to contact any of Ed’s character witnesses.
Taking pity on him, a junior officer finally contacts Ed’s lawyer. Once his attorney arrives, the truth comes out quickly, and the case is dismissed. While Ed receives justice, the officers face minimal consequences.
Listen in for a breakdown of what went wrong, how the situation should have been handled properly, and how easily civil liberties can be lost if they aren’t protected. And what about that fishing trip—does Ed ever make it?
