After Lum’s last-minute evidence causes the case with Squire Skimp to be thrown out of court, Lum enters the store to gloat about his newly discovered legal expertise to Abner and Grandpap. Lum tries to explain legal matters to Abner—though it’s clear Lum doesn’t entirely know what he’s talking about—while Abner gets hopelessly confused by a figure of speech or two.
Encouraged by his recent success, Lum decides to open his own law office. Abner and Grandpap both have their doubts, with Abner worrying they already have too many businesses to manage between the Jot ‘Em Down Store, the movie theater, and now a law firm. Lum takes his first potential legal cases over the party line, but just as he settles into his new role, Cedric arrives with news that might put a damper on Lum’s legal career before it even gets started.
