Shortly after the platoon of patrolmen turns out for their shift, Captain Canelli receives word that a dead body has been discovered under a loading dock. The initial patrolman assumed the victim was merely a drunk sleeping it off, but investigation reveals he was shot to death.
Canelli immediately orchestrates the response, calling in detectives before clues grow cold. The body is taken to the morgue and identified as Edward Burgess, and his next of kin is notified. When questioned, the victim’s son acts visibly nervous, raising suspicion when detectives uncover high-dollar life insurance policies naming him as the sole beneficiary.
After catching the son in several lies regarding his whereabouts during the murder, a witness unexpectedly comes forward to clear his alibi. Forced to pivot, the detectives follow a fresh trail to their next likely suspect—and race to track him down before he can slip away.
