Down in Pine Ridge, Abner is already regretting his decision to take sole charge of the Jot ‘Em Down Store. Venting his disappointment to Grandpap, Abner nearly kicks him out of the store—until he realizes Grandpap has a sizeable grocery list to fill. Abner gets a bit of satisfaction upon hearing that things aren’t going so smoothly over at the picture show, either, where Lum is forced to deal with a disgruntled Mose Moose. Although Abner is still boycotting the theater, Grandpap fills him in on the latest feature.
When Lum walks into the store, a fearful Abner attempts to hide, but Lum has actually come to apologize. Bothered by his conscience, Lum wants to make amends, leading both friends to become so overly apologetic that they end up arguing over who is more sorry. Just as the partners reconcile and prepare to reunite, bad news comes over the party line: the movie theater is on fire!
