On the way to the safety of the lake, Deer Slayer and his companion narrowly escape the Iriquois warriors. As they float on the water, they find a fortified house. Nobody is home. Should they take shelter, or keep going?

His uninformed friends share their biased, and ignorant opinions of the Indians. Deer Slayer sets them straight by claiming that God made all men alike, and they deserve respect. The discussion is cut short when Tom, the owner of the cabin arrives, and the woodsmen barely have time to take shelter from a prowling bvand of Indians.
