In the barber shop a man gets the finishing touches before he turns to doing a tough job, telling old sheriff Starbuck that he’s fired. The whole town agrees, but the news won’t be easy to break. The tension is broken when Brit arrives for a trim and small talk abounds.

The man in the chair, Alph, sees the chance to pawn off the duty on Brit. Old Gabe is the sheriff, but the town has voted him out. Gabe has done a lot for the town, maybe a deputy will ease his work load? Brit finds himself looking for old Gabe. Gabe looks older than he ought, and his target practice session isn’t hitting too many. Can Brit let the man down gently? Can he direct the old sheriff’s thought to those of settling down on a ranch?

Though Brit talks long and leisurely, the topic of vacating the sheriff position never seems to come up. Suddenly the alarm sounds that the bank has been robbed. Gabe is sure he saw the robbers heading East, not a logical direction for a get away. The posse mutiny’s and rides in their own direction. Brit shares his thoughts as he rides slowly East. Brit notices only one set of hoof prints, but before getting too close, Brit holds back to watch Gabe’s strange behavior. Shooting at nothing, and riding fast back to town. Then something else catches Brit’s eye. There’s something fishy going on, but should Brit tell on the old timer?

In epilog, Brit tells the outcome of Gabe, and the town’s decision.
