Lum and Abner – Who Are Dixie Belle And Mary Jane. 350807

A black-and-white photo of Lum and Abner. Lum is on the left and has wavy hair and a mustache. He's wearing a suit and tie, and looks amused or curious. Abner is on the right, has messy hair and a beard, with exaggerated, surprised expression. He's wearing glasses and a dark suit with a bow tie. The composition suggests a comedic setting.

Mothers should know that for 50 years, Horlicks has been known the world around as a top-notch food for infants. Nourishing and energy-giving, it makes a fine food for nursing mothers as well.

Down in Pine Ridge, Lum hangs out in Dick Huddleston’s store after Abner has sold out the Jottem Down store and dived headfirst into the high-society scene. They talk about his fast driving habits in his big car and his latest kick of going to the horse races.

Just then, Lizabeth phones to talk to Lum about her concerns for Abner. She is afraid that Abner’s adventures with wine, song, and fast living are now extending to women, having caught him sleep-talking and saying the names “Dixie Belle” and “Mary Jane.”

After the phone call, Abner walks in just as Dick and Lum are about to give him a lecture. First, Abner needs to give Grandpap a buzz on the telephone, laying on the latest cool jive talk and arranging to meet up with the two gals mentioned earlier. However, Abner finally slows down enough to get an earful from Lum about Dixie Belle and Mary Jane. Though Abner denies chasing other women, he reveals a surprising truth: those names actually belong to a couple of racehorses!
