On the streets of Dodge, a man is gunned down in cold blood. Distraught and upset, the victim’s brother cannot think of anyone with a motive to kill him, but he demands that Matt Dillon track down the killer. Shortly after, Matt and Chester receive a visit from Kitty, who brings a clue from a young lady who was with the victim at the time of the shooting.

Matt has his hands full when he rides out to a hostile cowboy camp to find the suspect. Fly Hoyt may be a rough, crude, and hardcase of a cowboy, but he insists he is neither a liar nor a killer. Willing to give him a fair chance to clear his name, Matt brings Fly back to Dodge.

However, conflicting stories complicate the case: is the hard-bitten cowboy lying, or is the timid young lady hiding something? As the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear a setup is in motion. When the young woman is shot, the circumstances look grim for Fly Hoyt. Refusing to rush to judgment, Matt holds off on arresting the cowboy and instead orchestrates a clever setup of his own to uncover the truth and deliver some rough justice.
