Narrating a case in which he did not directly participate, Dr. Watson recounts an extraordinary adventure told to him by Sherlock Holmes.
While climbing remote mountain passes, a severe storm brings disaster to an expedition, leaving Holmes as the sole survivor. Presumed dead by the world for two years, a battling and delirious Holmes is rescued and nursed back to health by a local girl who agrees to keep his survival a secret. Posing as a Norwegian named Olaf, Holmes finds refuge in a remote mountaintop cottage where a international group gathers—including a Russian, an Englishman, and an American.
Tension quickly escalates when murder strikes a nearby monastery of peace: a Chinese emissary is found strangled with his own jewels. Determined to uncover the truth, Holmes quietly evaluates the clues and tracks the whereabouts of each guest. Dissecting alibis and motives, Holmes works to unmask the killer and restore tranquility to the sacred sanctuary.
