Down in Pine Ridge, Lum has had to take a job working for Abner after his movie theater burned down. Today, Abner is arguing with Lum over his workmanship. Abner takes a phone call order and gloats a bit over his newfound authority in the store, while Lum struggles to cope with his lower status and meager pay. Getting a little carried away with his power, Abner almost calls his wife, Lizabeth, to boss her around too—before deciding instead to invite Lum over for a special meal.

Dick Huddleston enters the store to talk with Abner about Lum’s plight and share news he heard from Grandpap. Dick warns Abner to ease up before he pushes things too far, urging him to focus on being friends again rather than trying to teach Lum a lesson. Despite the warning, Abner decides to keep riding Lum until dinner. But when Lum is spotted talking with Squire Skimp, he has already taken all the bossing from Abner he can stand. Lum quits on the spot and announces he is going into business with Squire from here on out.
