While headed toward the town of Pleasantville, Wild Bill Hickok and Jingles stop off for a quick swim in the creek before checking the local telegraph office for messages from Abilene. Finding no news, the duo heads into town looking for a bit of entertainment.
Jingles encounters a travelling magician and narrowly avoids being sawn in half when an urgent telegram arrives: a confidence man is on the loose in the area. Soon after, Jingles realizes his watch is missing, and Bill has to step in when a brawl breaks out over the theft.
Meanwhile, a trusting local widow entrusts her life savings to the magician for safekeeping. On his way to deposit the money, the magician is supposedly ambushed by a highwayman. Hearing gunshots, Bill and Jingles race to the scene. Though the magician spins a convincing tale of being robbed, Bill remains skeptical.
While Bill rides cross-country in pursuit of the bandit, Jingles brings the widow to meet them all at the telegraph office. When Bill returns with the bandit in tow, he exposes the entire scam, recovers the widow’s savings, and leaves the town with a valuable lesson in who they can truly trust.
