On the planet Mercury, emergencies have Commander Correy and Cadet Happy torn between a lost spaceship on the dark side of the planet and trouble in the city on the sunward side.
The scientist doing work for mining operations has been missing for four days. Is there any hope he could have survived the sub-zero temperatures on the side of that scorching planet that always faces away from the sun? Earthquakes seem to be commonplace, causing steam vents and surface cracks—though shouldn’t those be called “Mercuryquakes”?
A radio signal offers hope that the scientist is still alive, but surface cracks and steam spouts keep raising red flags for Commander Correy, keeping him busy as he stays on the trail of saboteurs. While investigating a well-camouflaged park of construction vehicles, Correy and Happy find themselves in grave danger as the giant machines suddenly come alive around them.
Will the saboteurs win? Will a radio warning message be sent out in time?
The high-speed chase after the saboteurs leads the Space Patrol directly along the path to rescue the missing scientist. How did he manage to survive? A key discovery offers salvation for the citizens of Solaria and signals an end to the mining sabotage.
