Down in Pine Ridge, the fire alarm has just been sounded at Lum’s picture show. Grandpap and Abner discuss the blaze, with Grandpap speculating that Squire Skimp might be behind the arson—though he manages to confuse Abner with a figure of speech along the way. Dick Huttleston arrives and agrees that the Squire is a likely suspect. When Abner mentions that Lum previously refused an offer to rejoin the Jot ‘Em Down Store, Dick reassures him that Lum had plenty of insurance to cover the loss.
Hearing about the coverage, Abner immediately jumps to conclusions: did Lum set the fire himself to collect the insurance money and retire in luxury? However, those suspicions quickly vanish when a visibly shaken Lum arrives at the store. Lum hands a letter from his insurance provider to Dick, who reads the devastating truth aloud—among all the policies Lum took out, he forgot to purchase one for fire.
