Down in Pine Ridge, Lum has been desperate ever since his movie theater burned down. Having just been hired by Abner as the store clerk, Lum vents to Grandpap about his new low position at the Jot ‘Em Down Store. He complains about being bossed around by Abner while boasting about other prospects through his civic duties. Right on cue, Abner enters, shouting orders and immediately putting Lum to work. As Lum steps out to handle his chores, Grandpap warns Abner not to push things too far, though Abner insists he’s just teaching Lum a lesson for all the times Lum bossed him around.
As they try to settle into the store’s daily routine, both Lum and Abner struggle to keep their new roles straight. However, when a phone order comes in, Lum instinctively falls back into his old role as boss. He orders Abner around and makes him jump to action to deliver the groceries himself.
