Joe Collins, a boxer and old friend, phones Simon Templar asking for help. But what kind of trouble is the boxer in?
When a toddler named Donnie is left in Simon’s care with a stern note of caution not to involve the police, things quickly take a suspicious turn. Down at the gym, Joe—a surefire champ—claims his call for help was just a false alarm. Not even assistance from Louie the cabbie is enough to ensure Donnie is fully cared for, so a nurse is hired to look after the child.
Hitting the streets to investigate Joe’s doubtful assurances, Simon and Louie begin to suspect the upcoming fight is fixed. Can Simon get Joe to come clean?
The pieces fall into place, revealing the connection between Joe, his ex-wife, and little Donnie. Racing back to his apartment, Simon discovers that Marie, the child’s mother, was posing as the nurse, and poetic justice has caught up with her.
