A young married couple arrives in their new apartment in the high-rent district. They are a little early, and management isn’t quite ready for them. Though it’s just the right kind of place for a budding mystery writer, Jeff reacts to the cramped one-room, basement apartment—until Nancy convinces him to like it.

Subtle secrets hint that the basement apartment may not be so ideal after all. Strange things begin to happen, but Nancy insists on staying until her advance rent is covered.

When a murder falls right at their feet, will the cops believe Nancy and Jeff had nothing to do with it? As the investigation develops, the police don’t seem thrilled with a mystery novelist’s input on the crime—nor do they seem able to do much besides suspecting everyone who crosses paths with the case.

It’s a situation sure to write Jeff’s next book all by itself. Gunshots, eccentric neighbors, and clues abound. A weeping girl shares the next clue regarding a blackmail scheme. The secrets of each tenant emerge, revealing the hold the blackmailer has over them. Has Jeff got it all figured out, or has he just set himself up as bait for a killer? What will Nancy think about her husband’s bravery? And will the cops be on hand to handle the heavy work?
