Down in Pine Ridge, Squire has had his movie theater closed down and is set to face charges in the court of Lum, Justice of the Peace.
Today, Lum and Abner talk about the possibility of Squire using tactics to avoid or delay the trial. The phone rings and Lum tells the caller about the details of the case, voicing his worry over the appearance of using the law for personal revenge. Worse yet, Lum has just received word that trouble is brewing—Squire plans to use his position on the School Board to make waves between Lum and his girlfriend, Evelina.
Squire is late, but finally shows up for his trial. He seems overly confident in the face of such serious charges. Will Lum let him off the hook?
Procedures are followed and the witnesses are called. Abner doesn’t quite grasp the protocols of a courtroom, but both Grandpap and Dick give their testimonies, presenting valid reasons for the fire hazard ordinance violation. Squire gets his moment and relies on the implied threat from the earlier phone call. What will Lum do? His hands are tied regarding Squire’s guilt, but he still has a free hand when it comes to sentencing.
