It’s time to hear from the man the whole world has been waiting for: Jack Benny!
Spirits run high as Don Wilson and Jack joke about their recent vacations. Mary Livingstone shares stories about her hospital visit and her handsome doctor, leading into the formal introduction of famous orchestra leader Phil Harris, who performs “Bye, Bye Baby”.
Jack continues describing Phil as the two bounce witty banter off each other, with Mary openly fawning over Phil’s good looks. Kenny Baker arrives to put a new slant on a few earlier jokes and gets introduced to Phil. After Mary receives a phone call from her doctor, Kenny performs the classic tune “The Way You Look Tonight”.
Kenny then introduces his new, giggly girlfriend to Jack. Next up, Jack interviews a special guest—a man who drives an aviation fuel gas truck—which transitions smoothly into Phil’s second musical number, “Sing, Baby, Sing”.
To wrap things up, Jack plugs next week’s upcoming extravaganza: a radio adaptation of the hit film Anthony Adverse. Finally, Don introduces a brand-new product: Jell-O Chocolate Pudding!
Note: This episode is a landmark entry for a couple of reasons. Kenny Baker’s performance of “The Way You Look Tonight” is an all-time classic, and beyond Phil Harris’s very first introduction to the cast, we get an early glimpse of Mary flirting with him—setting up a comedic dynamic that would continue throughout the mid-to-late 1940s.
