Gildersleeve works on his end dove the month reports in the water Commissioner’s office. His attention is disrupted by the unwanted advances of an insurance salesman. He manages to apply enough persuasion to convince Gildy to have a physical. Although his health is normal, the doctor recommends that he quits smoking cigars.
At home, Gildy does his own research to see if there’s any loopholes about not smoking. He wants a truthful second opinion from Bertie. Will her observations offer him any encouragement?
As he walked to the drugstore, he meets up with Leila Ransom. When he enters he tries to be nonchalant in finding out what the druggist went missing a couple weeks ago. Will his mastery of psychology extract the information? The topic of Peavey doesn’t come up right away, but when Leila hears about giving up cigars she thinks Gildy has been seeing another woman. He admires Peavey’s courage in leaving town temporarily. Leila encourages Gildersleeve to be courageous, and drops hints about marriage. Will he take her up on it? Or will he just light up a smoke?
