Let’s Pretend – Douban The Physician

A fairy sitting on a flower blossom, with her wings spread out and a wand in her hand. The flower is vibrant purple and the fairy has a mischievous smile on her face.

How should we travel to our magical storyland today? Pogo sticks sounds like the way to go. The story is one adapted from the Arabian Nights, and is about an angry king who is deathly ill. A counselor advises the son to take advantage of the situation and become the new king. Instead, the son offers a reward for the doctor who can heal his father. The son really thinks the king would feel better if he controlled his anger though.

An added layer to the plot comes from the son’s desire to marry the bride of his choice, and not an arranged marriage that the king had planned. Will the king approve? Will the young love end in tragedy?

The girl prays to her fairy godmother for advice with the unknown man, not knowing he’s the prince. A love potion is intended to be given to ensure the prince’s heart is won over to her. I don’t think she’ll need it, but I’ll play along.

Often in the stories in the Arabian Nights a tragic ending awaits, or a few loose ends that never get tied up, but for this production, you can count on a little of both.

The king has found a physician, but despite the work of the doctor, he isn’t trusted, and sent to be executed When the love potion is administered, it is given to the wrong person. But which will be the tragedy, and which will end up happily? Listen in and enjoy the tale for yourself.
