it’s from Little Pearl, and she promises to send a present in the mail soon. What can it be? Abner tries to guess. Maybe it’s a giraffe? She said he’d never guess. Squire sneaks in the back way, and fearful it would’ve been better to have stayed in jail. He tells how the towns folk are after him for putting that scare into them. Will Lum and Abner be able to protect Squire from the mob who would like to string him up?

Outside, Squire gets the chance to explain himself to the angry crowd. Will they believe his appeals that he meant no harm, and to forgive his mischief?
