As much as Doctors Gillespie and Kildare try going to great lengths, and sparing no expense to save the lives of patients, Doctor Carew is the hospital administrator who has to conserve, and pinch pennies to cut costs when he can. The 1950’s version of a self imposed HMO. It’s not that Carew isn’t caring, but he gets painted as the bad guy, or the old stick in the mud when it comes to patient care.
Today seems to be a slow medicine day, and Kildare gets involved with a 14 year old boy who faces legal troubles when he has to go to court over possession of a stolen gun. Was he planning to get revenge on other students who had been picking on him at school? Doc Kildare thinks there’s more going on with Terry than in just stealling a gun. Soon, items around the hospital come up missing.
Visiting Terry at home, Kildare confronts the boy over a missing scalpel, and begins to suspect something deeper in Terry’s psychology. Is he a kleptomaniac, a habitual liar, does he have some pshychotic problem from being bullied? After cross checking some details, Kildare thinks Terry may have a hearing problem. Confused words have caused misunderstandings in Terry’s past that had led to his recent thefts. Can the hearing trouble be cured? Of course, and it might not be so difficult to do than you might expect.
