Jack Benny – Jack Buys The Maxwell. 371024

Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone and Don Wilson posing for a photo in 1938.

Don gives Jack an intro that points out his less than romantic nature. Jack announces he’s finally traded in the old Stanley Steamer for a Maxwell. Even now, Maxwell’s haven’t been made for 10 years. The car jokes set the theme for the night. Phil and Mary put in a few words on the Maxwell.

After Kenny makes a few wisecracks, and a telegram arrives about the car, he sings, I Saw You Last Night. Jack just can’t get any respect about his car, so he announces the play for the show. Wife,
Doctor, and Nurse. A running gag is started about Loretta Young. Right after Phil plays, You Can’t Stop Me From Dreaming.

Let the medical jokes begin! with Dr Benny, Dr Harris, Dr Baker, nurse Mary, and standing in for Loretta Young… Andy Devine? Definitely interesting, not to mention some good flubs on the medical terms. There’s even time for a few words with Schlepperman, and a brief musical number.

Notes: Classic moments, and some good points of trivia appear with this show. The first Maxwell show, the car that was replaced by the Maxwell. How old was the Maxwell? See if you can think of others. Leave a comment to let me know.

Plus, I love the reply Mary gives when Jack tries to play down the issue of the missing Loretta Young. The comment about being beautiful.
