Retracing the footsteps that Bob Hope and his cast took, this special gives a brief glimpse into what it was like to travel and perform for the troops.
Bob takes the stage to joke about the trip, the rough flights, his cast, his English fan club, meeting the King, and troops on KP. He reviews his travel itenary, and the importance it is given from the top of the military command. Air crews joke over tense situations with weather and potential bullets flying. Despite delays, Bob visits troops in the hospital to cheer them up with a one man show.
Bob tells about meeting civilians on the street, and greeting returning bombers with fewer in the crew than when they started. The shows for the troops seem endless, and often in dangerous places. Speaking with GeneralEisenhower himself,Bob is assuured of the great imppact his performances are having on the morale of the troops.
There’s at least one close call for Bob as he travels through the European theater. Though dead on his feet, Bob always finds the energy for one more show.
He recounts the scene of an over crowded surgery recovery room, and the condition of the bravery in the troops. As he is driven through the streets, he gives impromteau shows with troops who dish the jokes right back. The whole while, he is in the same danger of dive bombers and incoming fire. Retracing his steps back home, the trip seems like a dream to Bob and his cast.
One particular visit wwith a dying troop is a standout moment for Bob, especially when the letter from the appreciative gold star mother is rread.
