Down in Pine Ridge, Abner has stepped up before Lum could admit the hoax he pulled, and claims that a dramatic rescue took place. Today Lum is reveling in the glory as he talks on the party line to adoring citizens, and to Cedric. Since the story is false anyway, it keeps growing in each retelling. Especially as Cedric tries to understand the situation, and like everybody else is hungry for the dramatic, it all feeds the story telling.
Before long Lum has awarded himself a chest full of medals for bravery. Abner arrives and Lum puts him on the party line to tell Sister Simpson how brave he is. Abner’s story isn’t quite as elaborate as Lum’s, but it gets the job done. The two decide to work on a story so they don’t run around spreading different sets of lies.
Lum seems to be having regrets over misleading everybody. Abner suggests that it’s too late to back down, and they’ll keep the story going.
