Macie is down in the dumps in her tiny apartment, thoroughly fed up with show-biz playboys. She reluctantly accepts a date with Merton, a timid soda jerk living in her building, only to receive a sudden call from her favorite ex-boyfriend, Eddie. Eddie is back in town with a new job as an insurance salesman, hoping they can start a life together.
After taking a flat in the building, Eddie gets reacquainted with Macie, while the strict building manager offers Macie some motherly advice on how to keep her man. Taking the advice a bit too far during dinner, Macie’s nosey interrogation makes Eddie late for work—causing him to lose his job on day one!
While Eddie goes to clean out his desk, Macie lets Merton down gently. Meanwhile, at the office, Eddie’s old hometown rival, Marsha, offers him a prime job at her father’s power plant in Niagara Falls. Excited, Eddie rushes to tell Macie, but she misinterprets “Niagara Falls” as a sudden marriage proposal and honeymoon!
When the building manager reveals that Eddie is actually traveling with Marsha, a devastated Macie heads to the train station to “help” him pack and depart—deliberately delaying him until he misses the train and loses the new job. Back moping in her apartment, Macie is left wondering if Eddie will ever forgive her or if her date with Merton is back on.
