Down in Pine Ridge, Abner has been living a life of ease and enjoying the high-society lifestyle. Lum is talking with Cedric, discussing silver mine dividends and the lag time between buying stock and seeing any cash roll in. In fact, nobody seems to be making any money out of the situation except Squire.
Dick Huddleston soon pops in to join the conversation, sharing what he has uncovered while investigating the silver mine deal. Dick remains deeply suspicious of the man who supposedly bought the mine from Squire, specifically noting the out-of-state license plates on his car. While Lum thinks the investigation is unnecessary, Dick is determined to ensure the whole thing isn’t a scam.
Later, Abner visits to share that he had to fire his driver and leave his car parked at home. Though Lum initially suspects Abner wrecked it, the truth comes out: Abner has blown through all his money and is forced to cut back. A humbled Abner approaches Lum about finding work, and the two decide to become partners once again, making plans to buy back the Jottem Down store.
