Jack Benny – Four Am Walk. ep859, 531101

Ablack-and-white scene showing two men walking side by side down a dimly lit street at night. One man, on the left, is pushing a small cart, while the other wears a long coat and hat. On the right side, a vintage car is parked with three people inside; one person is waving out of the window. This SI generated image also portrays street lamps that illuminate the otherwise dark and empty urban street, and the setting suggests a mid-20th-century time period.

Don Wilson quietly takes us for a peek at Jack in his home at 4:00 AM. Why would his phone be ringing at this ungodly hour? Jack is mad, can’t sleep, and soon learns why Rochester didn’t answer the phone. Unable to drift back off, Jack decides to take a stroll outside. Will Mary like to join Jack on his walk? Not a chance!

Out in the crisp air, Jack enjoys the quiet, empty streets and chats with Mel Blanc, the street cleaner. What other colorful characters will Jack cross paths with, and what sights will he see? Bob Crosby drives by, taking his band out duck hunting, before the rising sun finally sends Jack back home.

Waiting for him is Don alongside the Sportsmen quartet, who serenade him with “Wake Up Sleepyhead”—featuring clever modified lyrics to sell the sponsor’s product, naturally. As Jack dozes off, Mary arrives. Can she wake him up? He accompanies her to go shopping, where they encounter Frank Nelson as the quintessential sarcastic sales clerk. Jokes about suits, morticians, being cheap, and Jack’s exhaustion run amok in this classic episode!
