Sally Carter is expecting a baby, but her husband Jim is deeply worried. Their rental agreement strictly forbids children, leaving them fearful that their landlady, Mrs. Hacket, will turn them out into the street for not disclosing the pregnancy sooner. While Sally isn’t legally obligated to say anything, her condition is becoming hard to hide.
Mrs. Hacket shows concern for Sally’s health in her own stern way, but she remains adamant about avoiding noise complaints from other tenants. As Sally patiently listens to the landlady’s endless unsolicited advice on raising children, the Carters struggle to find an alternative apartment. Over time, Sally begins to warm up to the old woman—raising the question of whether she can win Mrs. Hacket over, or if the Carters will soon be forced to pack their bags.
