The cast arrives, featuring Don Wilson, Dennis Day, and Bob Crosby. Dennis kicks things off with a joke about being a crusty yet seasick pirate before treating the audience to a rendition of “Because You’re Mine.” Before Jack can launch into the day’s main sketch, Bob Crosby steps in with a special request: How can Jack help out with brother Bing’s latest business venture? Parts are quickly assigned, and Mel Blanc joins the all-male cast for today’s adventure.
Jack and Don star as gold prospectors in Old Mexico, searching for an elusive guide—an old-timer played by Dennis Day. Enter the Sportsmen quartet as four musical Mexicans singing a sponsor-infused version of “Tampico.” When banditos roll into town, will Sy back down from Irish Gallagher? Si! What about his sister, Sue? Well, she’s actually Raquel. Not to be outdone, his little brother arrives with a magic act to pick up the slack—or tries to, anyway. In fact, Jack can barely finish the routine without breaking character and laughing.
Back to the main plot, greed takes over, and the gold remains an elusive dream as gunplay brings a comical yet tragic end to the spoof.
Note: The sponsor claims that smoking enjoyment is just a matter of taste—perhaps they’re right! At any rate, please remember that vintage commercials are preserved for entertainment and historical purposes only. (Don’t smoke; it’s bad for you!)
P.S. Upon hearing Jack’s nickname during the play, Dennis Day lets out an authentic “Oy vey!”—a clever nod to Jack’s real-life heritage and a funny contrast to Dennis’s Irish roots.
