Following the fire that destroyed his movie theater, Lum discovers that while he was covered for various liability options, he completely forgot to purchase fire insurance. Down at the Jot ‘Em Down Store, Abner takes to the party line to announce the week’s grocery specials. Shortly after, Lum stops by to check if Abner needs any extra help, especially now that Cedric has been fired. Lum reveals his dire financial situation, sharing that after paying off all his remaining bills, he is left with only a few dollars to his name.
Too proud to beg directly for work, Lum tries dropping subtle hints in hopes that Abner will offer him a job. However, Abner proves too dense to put the clues together or realize the hiring idea is supposed to be his own. Confused by Lum’s dramatic figures of speech describing his despair, Abner takes his time catching on—until the lightbulb finally flickers, and he hires Lum as the store’s new clerk and delivery boy.
