Hal Dixon is a loud jokester staying at King Moses’ hotel, but has he been wearing his welcome thin with Sailor? Secrets quickly emerge between Dixon and his traveling companion, Frannie Lane. When Frannie turns up dead, Slate Shannon finds himself set up for murder.
The police release Slate, but only because they learn Frannie’s real husband just escaped from a Cuban prison. That isn’t enough to satisfy Slate—he knows he’s innocent, but he isn’t about to leave his fate to chance. With Sailor at his side, Shannon hits the street to track down leads through seedy dives and shady characters, leaving Sailor to wonder how he knows so many lowlifes.
Shannon tracks down the escaped felon, Carper, who reveals a dark tale of bank robbery, but the meeting ends in gunfire. Meanwhile, back at the hotel, Sailor and King Moses uncover a critical clue: a letter addressed to the late Frannie Lane. With danger closing in from all sides, Slate must act fast to stop the killer and rescue Sailor before it’s too late.
