Is Effie in trouble with Sam for taking advantage of office supplies? He has a surprise for her and plans to let her have it when he comes in to dictate his latest report.

Sam details the case of a well-to-do family dealing with a prodigal daughter. The family rift stems from an accident that left Mr. Skelley without the use of his vocal cords. His assistant shares concerns that the young woman, Helen, will get into serious trouble and forfeit her inheritance if she doesn’t stop dating Chip, an ex-convict. Chip appears to be after her money—a fact Helen knows but doesn’t seem to care about.

The timeline for the inheritance takes a sudden shift when gunshots ring out, leaving Sam’s client dead. With headlines splashing news of the murder across town, Chip goes on the run as the prime suspect.

Following the trail leads Sam to a nightclub partner and the revelation of a secret marriage between Chip and Helen. But Sam smells a set-up. Did Chip really kill the old man, or is someone else eager to cash in on the fortune?
