after Leroy’s piano lesson, judge Hooker is on hand to offer to walk Miss Piper home. When Gildersleeve sends him away, Miss Piper notices that each time he walks her home is always a longer walk. What makes her walks so enjoyable? She doesn’t think of him as a water Commissioner, but how does she see him? He begins to tell her about the responsibilities he oversees at the water department. Will she ever see his flirtations as more than just friendly or fatherly companionship?

Returning home, Gildy is stopped by Mrs. Ransom. She remarks on his sad appearance. Has he had a lover’s quarrel with JoAnn? Might she be dating the young Mr. Albright from the bank? Leila offers her best romantic advice for him. She sure that if he puts his cards on the table. It will settle the whole thing. But maybe not the way he expects.

On another day, Gildersleeve walks miss Piper home via the water reservoir. She tells him about a book she’s been reading about Tchaikovsky’s romance. Later, Gildy tries his hand at playing a Tchaikovsky tune. Will Marjorie and Leroy figure out the love connection? Later still, Gildersleeve visits the music store to pick up some copies of Tchaikovsky’s music, only to find out it sold out. Gildersleeve manages to meet Eve Goodwin while he’s out, and wants her honest opinion on his romantic situation. She does, and tells Gildy about the detail in the romance that he didn’t count on.
