Gracie is responsible for getting George, and Sam Spade where they are today. In jail. In the jailhouse George explains to the jailer how Gracie landed him and Howard Duff in jail. In flashback, and in the manner of the radio series, the Adventures of Sam Spade, George tries explaining to Gracie that Sam Spade is a fictional character. After listening to a recent episode of Sam spade, Gracie is sure the butler did not do it. Using her own detective skills, she hunts down the radio detective and pesters him all the way home. Do you have a cigarette question do you have a match? Do you have the time? Howard has his hands full and trying to shake his tail.
Gracie’s determination doesn’t end until she sees the butler freed from jail. But now she has a new question. If the butler didn’t do it, then who did? The only character left in the story is Sam Spade himself. Once again pestering Howard, Gracie won’t rest until he admits his crime. George and Howard developed the idea to pretend George is taking Howard to jail. One thing they didn’t anticipate was what Gracie had planned next.
Back in the jail cell, and a sponsor message from Bill Goodwin the story continues. Gracie hides the police officer in the next room, as she finally extracts the confession from Howard. The confession is so airtight, that George is dragged in as an accomplice. The sympathetic police hear the story, and set the jailbirds free. But as Gracie finished bringing justice to the world of radio detectives? Look out Ellery Queen!
