it’s near the end of business at the water department, and the great Gildersleeve is trying to tune in the news on his radio. Leroy is on hand, and his educated on the dilemma of civil employees as he walks home with his uncle. As a public servant Gildy tries to make the effort to interact with the public. Will the public be so receptive? At home, Marjorie says that Leroy is going to a meeting of junior thinkers. He tries to explain his newfound motivations to Marjorie. Is this just another idle crusade during an election year?

Gildersleeve’s tries to position himself as the mayor’s right-hand man. You wouldn’t of line he is soon awarded the title of Civic coordinator. Ms. Higgins, a professor at the school of business turns out to be the lady Gildersleeve met on the street. The mayor has a scheme to recruit the professor for some civic duties around City Hall. In the water Commissioner’s office, Gildersleeve measures up his door to see if his new title will fit on it. Judge Hooker arrives to tease his old friend. When Ms. Pickens arrives, she drops the ball to let Gildy know that she is now the Civic coordinator.

Gildersleeve is upset, and shares his grief at home with Marjorie and Leroy. The family becomes concerned when they learn how Gildersleeve agitated the situation. For now, the great man goes to the drugstore for some advice. As the gents discuss the man’s world of business, Marjorie warns her uncle that Ms. Pickens is going through the files in his office. Will Gildy have anything to worry about with his efficiency on the job? Gildy finds his upper hand when he discovers she doesn’t know the technical aspects of his job.
