Jack Benny – Rose Bowl Parade. 550102

A black-and-white photograph depicting Jack Benny in a suit holding papers and speaking into a vintage-style microphone. The setting appears to be an old-time radio or recording studio. Jack is standing beside a couple of folding chairs, and there are some blurred background elements that suggest a studio environment. The overall tone is formal, reminiscent of mid-20th-century broadcasting.

Jack calls a stop to Bob Crosby as the band opens the show. Jack complains about the drunken state of the band at the start of the new year. Bob tries to review the new rules of conduct with the band. Don is jumpy because he has to be on a new diet. Jack has to deal with a complaining office boy, Joe Besser, who is late with the scripts. Don finally gives the show its usual opening and Jack talks about making fresh starts in the new year.

Jack wants to only do sophisticated humor, but it gets put to the test pretty quick when Dennis shows up. Dennis sings, In the Shoe Maker Shop.

The conversation turns to Jack’s activities the day before. Flashback to Rochester driving Jack and Gertrude, the phone operator in the Maxwell. She and Jack talk about their wild date at the New Years Eve party. As the Rose Bowl parade goes by, the Sportsmen are on a passing float to sing the sponsor’s commercial for the day.

Jack really needs to get through the intersection, but before he can appeal to the cop, he gets to talk to a drunk who is missing his wife. As it turns out, the cop is Mr. Kitzel. He complains about his job as a temporary cop, but Jack manages to be allowed to cross the street. When the Maxwell conks out, Jack becomes an unwilling participant in the parade.
