when a couple of shady characters meet, the result is a hired killer coming for Matt Dillon. In the long branch, Chester shares his feelings that something bad is about to happen. Matt thinks it’s a lot of worrying over nothing, until an informant tells him he overheard that shady deal going down. With the size of the payoff for the hitman, Matt checks with the banker to see if someone local made a huge withdrawal.
The streets of Dodge city continue to be quiet as Matt and Chester make their rounds. Two days of waiting are beginning to wear on Matt’s nerves. In the long branch, Kitty confronts Matt over what’s bothering him. Not ready to confide in her, he heads over to the Cowboys who are new in town he confronts his suspect, and decides to push him a little bit. Will the cattlemen take the bait? Might there be other ways to force the play? The waiting comes to an end when a gun shot rings out. The sniper misses, but gets away before Matt can react.
More days pass without a move. Matt returns to his suspected rancher, Lawson Hale. Although he has nothing to arrest him on, he does it anyway in an attempt to scare him. Will the extortion trick work? Will Matt learn any information from the jailed rancher? It’s not much, but enough for a confrontation in the saloon. Matt still doesn’t have the evidence he needs, until he discovers that his prisoner got what he bargained for back at the jail.
